Piebald Blackbird
Piebald Blackbird
“Piebald Blackbird” Turdus Merula 🐦⬛
Abnormal white or pale plumage due to a lack of melanin pigment can occur in any bird species but does seem to be particularly common in Blackbirds. This is often caused by leucism, a condition caused by genetic differences that affect pigmentation production.
Amazingly Blackbirds are green listed in the UK and populations are of least concern …hooray! 🤩
However, this comes with a caveat as the British Trust for Ornithology have recently reported that there are concerns about Blackbird populations in South East UK due to the usutu virus which is spread by mosquitos ☹️
